The planned West gate creates a soft transition between the Zoo and surrounding environment – it is an in-between environment, an undefined borderzone creating a new spatial quality. Lagoon (lacona – ´void` in Latin) is formed as a courtyard, surrounded by a foyer, nature educational center, a fast food restaurant, į la carte restaurant, administration and children`s zoo. As a result two different public spaces will evolve. One is more intimate, suitable for getting together, with a fountain and a pond. The other one, oriented according to views, is treated as a roof-landscape which enables different usage from observing the animals to outdoor lectures, from cafe to walking or sports track.
