The Baltic Sea Education and Exhibition Centre is situated on a peculiar spot between the seaside and a closed basin, former fish breeding facility. The shape of the building is elongated to make maximum contact with both waterfronts and to fit in between the existing high trees. Both ends relate to and make use of the surroundings. The elevated restaurant side enables the best views; its steps form a canopy for outdoor events and the gradatory entrance terrace may be alternatively used as an outdoor auditorium. The other side is more private with apartments, sauna and recreational spaces. The building houses a varied mix of functions which must be usable independently as well as in an integrated way. The public zone with exhibition space, foyer and restaurant form a spatial whole along the whole building with more private functions adjoining. The double facade on the building’s sides and underneath the cantilever make for a threedimensional surface playing with light and shadow, and work as microclimate control.
